Cupping
Cupping therapy is a method of soft tissue mobilization that aims to increase blood circulation, break up adhesions/scar tissue, decrease pain, and reduce inflammation. Originating in Asia, it is now most commonly used for musculoskeletal conditions. Cupping works by suctioning the skin to decompress the tissue and create a vacuum at the area of treatment. This suction force pulls blood and fluid away from the muscles towards to surface of the skin. This is where our lymphatic system kicks in and filters the fluid.
Common Questions Regarding Cupping
Does it hurt?
No, cupping should NOT hurt. Most people feel a deep pressure sensation while undergoing this therapy. There should be no sharp/stabbing sensations and most patients report pain relief post-treatment.
Is it safe?
Yes! There is little to no risk involved with this treatment. We utilize suction cupping where there is no flame used during the procedure. We take a detailed history during your first visit to ensure you are good candidate for this treatment.
Why do I bruise after?
When we suction the skin, we are breaking up small blood capillaries beneath the skin. This creates the visual bruising after treatment. However, the bruising typically does not hurt after treatment. The bruising marks are just a visual reminant of the treatment.
